One ranking policeman who jumped to the assistance of a partner that got attacked by a knifeman received the King's Commendation for Courage.

Sgt Tim Ansell struggled against 27-yr-old Jacob Brown after he held a weapon to the neck of his fellow officer Sgt Marc Foster.

Brown began the violence as the law enforcement personnel and their colleague, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, were conversing to a motorist subsequent to a traffic accident in Whalley Range in July 2023.

Brown attacked with blade the two Sgt Ansell and Sergeant Foster prior to Police Constable Wolstencroft incapacitated him with a electric weapon.

"Officer attacked," the officer stated over his radio.

Bodyworn and dashcam video made public by the force depicted Brown, who was dressed in black with a hood up, approach to Sgt Foster from behind with a knife pointed forward.

He ran into the policeman who stumbled and went down to the ground, after which Sgt Ansell jumped in and attempted to subdue him to the pavement although being continually attacked with the knife.

Police Constable Wolstencroft drew his Taser and sought a clear shot, bringing the fight to an end.

Sgt Ansell can be heard to say: "Please provide assistance on my neck here, I got knifed in the throat."

Sergeant Ansell suffered two open wounds to his neck and more wounds to his arms and torso, whereas Sergeant Foster suffered knife wounds.

The department reported Sergeant Foster used his bare hands to stop his colleague's hemorrhaging prior to paramedics arrived.

This most recent honor follows subsequent to the three officers received departmental Courage Honors in October 2023 and the prestigious bravery honor from the regional officer association in April 2024.

They were also awarded a Area Valor Recognition in mid-2024.

"The responses of all three officers ultimately rescued each other and ensured no bystanders endured any harm."

Brown received a sentence to an psychiatric detention in early 2024, according to the department.
