‘It seems like sorcery’: is light therapy truly capable of improving your skin, whitening your teeth, and strengthening your joints?
Light-based treatment is clearly enjoying a wave of attention. You can now buy light-emitting tools for everything from dermatological concerns and fine lines to muscle pain and periodontal issues, the newest innovation is a dental hygiene device equipped with small red light diodes, described by its makers as “a major advance for domestic dental hygiene.” Globally, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. Based on supporter testimonials, it’s like bathing in one of those LED-lit beauty masks, boosting skin collagen, easing muscle tension, relieving inflammation and chronic health conditions and potentially guarding against cognitive decline.
The Science and Skepticism
“It appears somewhat mystical,” notes a neuroscience expert, a scientist who has studied phototherapy extensively. Certainly, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Sunlight enables vitamin D production, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Natural light synchronizes our biological clocks, too, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and winding down bodily functions for sleep as it fades into night. Daylight-simulating devices are standard treatment for winter mood disorders to boost low mood in winter. So there’s no doubt we need light energy to function well.
Different Light Modalities
Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, consumer light therapy products mostly feature red and infrared emissions. In serious clinical research, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, identifying the optimal wavelength is crucial. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, extending from long-wavelength radiation to high-energy gamma radiation. Phototherapy, or light therapy uses wavelengths around the middle of this spectrum, including invisible ultraviolet radiation, followed by visible light encompassing rainbow colors and then infrared (which we can see with night-vision goggles).
Dermatologists have utilized UV therapy for extensive periods to treat chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and vitiligo. It works on the immune system within cells, “and suppresses swelling,” notes Dr Bernard Ho. “There’s lots of evidence for phototherapy.” UVA reaches deeper skin layers compared to UVB, whereas the LEDs we see on consumer light-therapy devices (usually producing colored light emissions) “generally affect surface layers.”
Safety Protocols and Medical Guidance
UVB radiation effects, such as burning or tanning, are understood but clinical devices employ restricted wavelength ranges – meaning smaller wavelengths – which minimises the risks. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, meaning intensity is regulated,” explains the dermatologist. Most importantly, the light sources are adjusted by technical experts, “to confirm suitable light frequency output – different from beauty salons, where regulations may be lax, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”
Consumer Devices and Evidence Gaps
Colored light diodes, he explains, “don’t have strong medical applications, though they might benefit some issues.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, help boost blood circulation, oxygen uptake and skin cell regeneration, and promote collagen synthesis – a key aspiration in anti-ageing effects. “Research exists,” comments the expert. “But it’s not conclusive.” Regardless, amid the sea of devices now available, “it’s unclear if device outputs match study parameters. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, proper positioning requirements, if benefits outweigh potential risks. Many uncertainties remain.”
Specific Applications and Professional Perspectives
One of the earliest blue-light products targeted Cutibacterium acnes, a microbe associated with acne. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – although, says Ho, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he says, however for consumer products, “we just tell them to try it carefully and to make sure it has been assessed for safety. If it’s not medically certified, oversight remains ambiguous.”
Advanced Research and Cellular Mechanisms
Simultaneously, in innovative scientific domains, researchers have been testing neural cells, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Virtually all experiments with specific wavelengths showed beneficial and safeguarding effects,” he reports. Multiple claimed advantages have created skepticism toward light treatment – that it’s too good to be true. But his research has thoroughly changed his mind in that respect.
The scientist mainly develops medications for neurological conditions, however two decades past, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he says. “I was quite suspicious. It was an unusual wavelength of about 1070 nanometres, that nobody believed did anything biological.”
Its beneficial characteristic, though, was that it travelled through water easily, enabling deeper tissue penetration.
Mitochondrial Effects and Brain Health
Additional research indicated infrared affected cellular mitochondria. These organelles generate cellular energy, producing fuel for biological processes. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, including the brain,” notes the researcher, who prioritized neurological investigations. “It has been shown that in humans this light therapy increases blood flow into the brain, which is generally advantageous.”
Using 1070nm wavelength, cellular power plants create limited oxidative molecules. At controlled levels these compounds, says Chazot, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, protect cellular integrity and manage defective proteins.”
All of these mechanisms appear promising for treating a brain disease: free radical neutralization, swelling control, and waste removal – autophagy representing cellular waste disposal.
