Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors
Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a series of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
The economist stated in a release that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and look forward tracking their advancement".
Summers, who formerly led the Ivy League institution, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his connections with Epstein.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed communications revealed that the official corresponded with Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the technology organization said it respected Summers' decision to depart.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the perspective he brought to the Board," the organization commented.
Legislative Background
This news comes after the entire Congress of Congress decided on recently to approve a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to release its documents on Epstein.
The bill will then head to the office of President Trump for approval. The President has said he plans to sign the bill, after changing his view on the issue following pressure from his supporters.
Email Contents
A group of Epstein-connected correspondence made public by the Congressional committee days ago mentioned multiple prominent individuals in the Epstein's former circle, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The emails showed that Summers and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often trying to connect Summers to influential international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the emails were made available with the wider community, the former official expressed he assumed "total ownership for my misguided judgment to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to rebuild trust and mend connections with the persons nearest to me".
Previous Positions
Summers served in high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under President Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He presided over the institution from five years and remains a professor there. When announcing his step-down from public roles recently on this week, he indicated he would continue his academic responsibilities.
Additional Consequences
Following his announcement on Monday, the policy organization, a left-leaning policy institute in the capital where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was not connected with the group.
The former official entered the directorate of OpenAI, which creates ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to remove its chief executive OpenAI's head.
