Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty
The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
