2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Era of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.
A Legacy of Leaping
Croaking characters are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. But, their prevalence has noticeably surged in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are bona fide Frog Games.
A Data-Driven Dive
To understand this rise, I performed a deep dive into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's elevated place in the broader culture is partially apparent elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the explosion in gaming appears uniquely powerful.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Frankly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have built-in creative potential for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues enable a wide array of innovative control schemes.
Many of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year yet.
Should these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be on the verge of a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
